Moving to the Bowery in 1970 was traumatic. It was still “Skid Row”--and my loft was above a bar: “The Whales Inn”, that served the locals, and I would have to step over drunks sleeping in my doorway. My painting changed from an almost minimalist abstraction to what I thought of as “in context”--showing something of the world around me.
